Thanks so much for the playthrough Voyia! We'll be making a sequel and something tells me you might get that widdle kiss 🫶

Thanks again, have a great birthday on the 10th!

Very interesting story! I am curious to see where this goes from here and would love to see these ideas expanded upon ~ ^_^

Hi Goddess-of-Gales, thank you for playing 'The Inbetween' and taking the time to leave your review of the game. We appreciate the playthrough and would like to take this opportunity to explain some of the design choices made in the game that may have caused some of the mixed feelings that the game has left you with.  :)

First, thank you for your compliments regarding the voice acting, Noah did a fantastic job and we were so glad to have him join us on this project. Also, the visual style can be totally attributed to the ‘Hyaku’ part of ‘Hyakuten’- we were happy to see you enjoyed the aesthetics.

As the writer and game project manager, I am happy to cover the constructive feedback you have (I'm the 'Ten' of 'Hyakuten'.

I think the key issue here is the length of the game, as that seems to have left some dissatisfaction and much of the constructive criticism stems from the small word count and the lack of explanation that comes with it.

As a development studio of 2, we both work full time in other jobs and both submitted individual entries into Nanoreno for the first time. So, ‘the Inbetween’ was a small, fun endeavour, making games as a pair as we enjoy each other's company. The philosophy being, the ‘journey is as important as the destination’ - if we had made it longer, we may have strained the capability of what we could do enjoyably and comfortably. But I can understand that as a piece in isolation - it may be brief and sparse.

We would definitely categorise it as a ‘micro’ visual Novel. We do intend to create a sequel, so perhaps some of your concerns regarding character motivation, lore and world mechanics might be better explained in that game. We had an only one of any asset mentality to develop the game on time and enjoyably, (which is probably more apparent when the context is provided) - which is why there is a significant amount of ‘tell’ and not ‘show’.

Having no narrator was a design choice that we've made in a couple of our titles. This one, in particular, was to leave the player in as confusing a situation as the MC themselves, it may seem vague and confusing and that is a valid perspective, but that was partly intentional, but we can understand that it may leave some players dissatisfied. In our first major title, Royal Duality, we extensively explained lore throughout the game, and many reviews felt the game spent too long explaining the setting and not allowing the characters to be characters. So we are still balancing and playing with the narrator concept in different games and seeing what sticks.

As there is a planned sequel, we unfortunately cannot go into details regarding Hellion and his motivations. But rest assured, the scamp has motivations that have been intentionally hidden so far.

To be candid, we were unsure if there would be any appetite for this game, it is a significant departure from our signature style of dark fantasy which is generally humourless or lacks humorous content, as a title, it was designed to test the waters. We were pleasantly surprised that this was by far, our best performing game - so we feel confident to make a sequel that will, we hope, answer many of your questions (if you wish to play, of course 😊).

We'd also like to address some of the points made in the video review regarding the punctuation. As the writer of the game, I can truly relate to the dislike of poorly used punctuation - and it is fair to say I dislike multiples of ! and ? being used without any value. But we did, in this title, use them in a playful fashion, there is no specific justification aside from us having a bit of fun!

Once again, we’d like to thank you for your review, feedback and playthrough.

I honestly loved the game! From the atmosphere, to the beautiful and colorful visuals and the charming voice acting was all very fun and captivating. I love how Hellion starts very confident and brave to get flustered as soon as we flirt with him, it genuinely made me chuckle. Both endings were absolutely perfect.

I hope we can see more of this cute dork(Affectionate) in the future.

Hi MissHC! Thanks so much for giving the delightful dork Hellion a chance!

We're happy to let you know that Hellion will be back in the future ❤️ so he can try and win hearts over a second time. Who knows? Maybe we'll get that smooch 💋

Thanks again for playing! 🫶

This was an adorable visual novel!

Hellion was an absolute delight (and kind of a dork), and his responses to everything were just so much fun. He was way nicer than one would expect a demon to be, and very charming.

I honestly laughed a lot during this VN. Both endings were delightful, and it was nice to see Hellion try to look after the player character either way.

The art was also really nice. Hellion's expressions were adorable, and the color scheme was very aesthetically pleasing. On top of that, the voice acting was fantastic and the music suited the setting very well!

The Inbetween really was a fun, short experience.
(Is it bad of me to kinda wish to see how Hellion and the player's adventures go on earth? 😂)

Thank you so much for your kind words Cryptid! He is a dork- actually a sweet boi! The voice acting from Noah was incredible and he brought so much to Hellion's character. It was a nice departure for us, a gentler story (despite the setting), a bright breezy colour scheme and a bit of jazz.

Don't feel bad about wanting to see Hellion again and...maybe...you will get to see Hellion's adventures (we'll be making an announcement about that soon)

Thanks again for the wonderful playthrough, it really makes us happy when we see them!

Ohh, I'll be keeping an eye out for that announcement!
I'm excited for a chance to see more of Hellion and his adventures 💖

Thank you for the kind words, as well 🥰
And thank you all for your hard work! So far the VNs I've gotten to play by this team have been an utter delight, and I'm looking forward to playing even more of them!

I love that Hellion is such a nice subvertion!! Like I thought he will turn sus or evil but no!! You're really not lying when you said that he has a soft spot for us or might have a crush on us ;; I wonder why that is the case? :0 I also expected a bad end if we refuse but no!! He came after us ;; What a guy :"3 What a game!!! <3

Also the artwork is amazing I love the color palette and the bright highlights :) Love the VA too I totally listened closely everytime he speaks haha

Thank you so much for the amazing feedback Maho_anpu <3

I think Hellion is such a fun liddle guy himself - despite him thinking he knows all the ropes and can't get flustered (immediately gets flustered).

Noah's voice acting delivery is absolutely amazing too! He's such a great talented guy!

A little slice of niceness in the hottest joint in the Underworld :) Thanks again for your kind words.

This was a really fun visual novel and I love how bright and colorful the backgrounds are and how hilarious The Hellion is! It was hard to go against my instinct to not take his offer the first time because he is quite charismatic! Thank you for this game :) and great work 😎

Thank you so much for the review! We're really glad you enjoyed your experience. ✨

We're looking forward to sharing more of Hellion's story with everyone one day

AWW this was SO cute!!! I absolutely loved the entire vibe of this entire game, with the poppy, saturated colors and the slightly jazzy feel of the bar. Hellion's sprite is gorgeously rendered, with an eye-popping design whose bold contrast pops off well against the neon-tinted background. His expressions were adorable (especially the ones where he got flustered, haha!) The writing is so fun, and I loved the color in Hellion's dialogue; even as this guy is giving me the worst news I've ever heard in my life, I just found him incredibly charming and endearing. Noah was absolutely BRILLIANT in this, and I loved his delivery!

======MINOR SPOILERS======

This was such an oddly wholesome game overall, one that I wasn't really expecting when I was bargaining for my life with a demon. Honestly throughout I was thinking "YES go ahead and take my soul lets go be besties," so it was kinda painful having to reject him to get the second ending. I love how much of a softie Hellion is, he even goes after the MC after they reject him. I just know that the MC and Hellion will have a HEA in the overworld together~

Really great work, I had a lot of fun! This was a blast!

Thanks so much for your feedback Chatter 🥹

We had a lot of fun making this one - especially the leading man himself, his whole voice and tone came alive with Noah's voice acting, we're so grateful he was willing to help out.

We're looking forward to sharing more of Hellion's shenanigans and times with MC in the future 🫶

Thank you so much for taking the time to play ✨

🤍🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤

Thank you so much for playing. ☺️

Hey! I played the gameand I didn't expect it to be that adorable! For some reason, I expected it to be darker, or to have some horror twist, so the fact it was all humour and fluff was VERY refreshing, and was a lot of fun!!

The Hellion was a very charming character: his expressions were adorable and the voice-acting gave him so much personality!! Despite being of a more sceptical nature, I could only but give in to his request, and I found myself happy to have helped a little demon making his dream come true!

The art was also gorgeous, and I particularly ADORED the use of colours, it looked wonderful! The little hints of saturated colours gave everything a hint of pop that really set the mood of the game.

Congrats on making this game, it was really fun and adorable!!

Thank you so much for the comment! We really appreciate it 🫶

No spooks this time, just a sweet demon looking for his life in the big bold overworld. We wanted to try something a little different, dipping our toe into fluff as it were. Noah is such a fantastic VA and brought Hellion to life so well 🙇

So grateful you took the time to play and give us a comment. We're so excited to check out all of the other entries once the jam is over. Rendez-Doug included 👀

this was a fun little game! the art and voice acting is fantastic and I loved Hellion's character so much!

Thank you so much for playing it (and so quickly as well! A real 'hot off the press playthrough!) - we really enjoyed watching :)

We're hoping that Hellion might be able to fulfil his promise and give you that 'smoocharoo' (his words not ours) when he gets to the surface. Who knows? Maybe we'll see he again ;)

But thank you again for linking to our game and sharing your play experience, we really appreciate it
